With most of the Overseer Legion appearing to be composed of humanoid soldiers, save for Scout Probes, it would seem to imply that there aren't any more 'exotic' subspecies among their ranks. This is, of course, a misconception. The fearsome insectoid monstrosities we have dubbed Rachnids prove that. The Rachnids are terrifying creatures, appearing to be a horrific mechanical combination of humanoids, spiders, wasps, and crabs. They swarm onto the battlefield, devastating their foes with their four bladed claws, which can clamp onto a victim and either slice and tear them to pieces, or simply pulverize them under their crushing grip. Their four primary eyes, as well as the secondary eyes set into their chest, act as visual receptors, allowing them to see light, thermal energy, and varied other types of vision, as well as launching the Overseers' all-too-familiar crimson rays. These secondary eyes, like those in their heads, act both as visual organs and energy weapons, while also concealing a third purpose that is as interesting as it is deadly...Rachnids possess a secondary 'brain' within their torsos, enabling them to survive the trauma of decapitation, and allowing them to continue fighting, having an unimpeded sense of sight thanks to the eyes set into their chests. Rachnids can fight for an extended amount of time without their heads, but they will likely eventually die from either blood loss or using up their last reserves of energy, which, hopefully for them, happens after they finish off their enemies. Rachnids also possess a sort of 'simple eyes' dotting the surface of their legs, allowing them a form of limited 360° vision, allowing them to stalk their prey almost unerringly.
Claws and eyes aren't the only thing Rachnids have four of. They master the terrain on four insectoid legs, as well as being able to access the sky with four wasplike mechanical booster wings. These wings allow the Rachnid to launch off the ground, allowing both flight and a fearsome leaping attack, as well as providing a boost on the ground, allowing the Rachnid to deploy the small wheels at its legtips, and dart across the battlefield before its hapless victim can even blink. As mentioned in the earlier Alpha-Strain article, Rachnids have multiple subspecies. β-Strain Rachnids are identifiable in the fact that, instead of the three secondary eyes of the α-Strains, they possess a large, core eye, much like that of a Scout Probe. This not only enhances the strength of the beam that it fires, but it also ends up improving the Rachnid's decapitated lifespan, as it has a larger, more effective secondary brain, which allows it to keep fighting with less strain, and perhaps even survive long enough to reach the end of the battle with enough life left to be restored by a Mender, an Overseer class which will be outlined later.
